Especially when our little ones begin to address us by name. We are frequently asked “how do I get my baby to say Mama and/or Dada?” Or, “how do I get my baby to say mama? He/she only says dada🤪”

👍🏼Good news! We have some tips for you that are broken down receptively and expressively.

RECEPTIVE:
✅Play turn taking games such as hide and seek
✅Ask them to give you things! You can do this with any item or toy, such as “give the ball to mama”.
✅Point to yourself and others in photos and label with names to support differentiation skills.

EXPRESSIVE:
✅Practice making sounds in the mirror and point to your mouth
✅Use auditory closure and wait time
✅Use acoustic highlighting such as a higher pitch, elongated words, and talk louder to make words stand out

👍🏼Once they receptively have a solid connection, it is likely that they will start to use the words expressively with the correct person!

Try incorporating wait time by ⬇️
-Making a silly sound, stop and pause 💥
-Leave out a word in a familiar song or book 📚
-Ask a question, pause and wait for their response ⁉️

Are you worried about your toddlers fluency⁉️ Do these characteristics sound familiar? We’re here to help!

Toddlers around 2-5 years old begin to talk more as a result of their expanding vocabulary. Did you know that it is not uncommon for young children to have disfluencies in their speech?!

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Children between 18 months and 3 years old typically exhibit speech disfluencies about once every 10 sentences as they learn to talk. For most toddlers and preschoolers, most disfluencies go away on their own after a short period of time.

However, some may not go away. Here’s what to look out for:
➡️ Does your child exhibit tension or struggle during their speech?

Pre-verbal communication is an essential step to developing sounds and words to communicate! These non-verbal attempts to communicate show you that your baby is realizing they can meet their needs in ways other than crying.

Eye Contact👀-One of the earliest attempts to communicate. Babies use eye contact to get our attention and to show you they are listening. It helps develop joint attention and turn-taking skills used later on to communicate.

Gestures- Pointing 👉they are telling you "Look" or "I want that", waving 👋 they are saying "hi" or "bye", reaching 👐 "pick me up", etc. According to @firstwordsproject the development of gestures from 9 to 16 months predicts language ability 2 years later. Babies should develop 2 new gestures per month from 9-16 months.

Imitating Actions👏-Before imitating sounds, babies develop the concept of "imitation" through actions. Be sure to give a few seconds after doing an action for your baby to imitate. Clapping👏, blowing a kiss😘, pushing a car🚗 , popping bubbles🫧 , tapping, knocking or banging✊🏼, mixing with a spoon🥄

Sign Language🤟- Infants as young as six months can learn early sign to communicate simple needs (more, all done, milk, me, etc.). Be sure when your baby uses a gesture to acknowledge their attempt! " see you pointing to the cup, you want your milk, here you go!

As speech therapists, we LOVE ❤️ using sign language to provide emotional 🤗, social 👯‍♀️and academic 🔠 support for language development.

👶🏼Infants as young as 6 MONTHS can learn to early signs to communicate simple needs.

Some examples we love to incorporate into classes are:
